Wedge
Possibly the Most Overlooked of all Props
I feel like the wedge is an overlooked, under-utilized & under-represented in the yoga prop world. Wedges can be a versatile addition to support your practice, especially if you struggle with wrist discomfort or limited flexibility. With my limited wrist mobility, I often use a wedge for my hands in down dog- by slightly elevating the heels of the hands, a wedge helps reduce strain & allows the wrist to stay in a more neutral position. Postures that may not be comfortable or even doable, such as downward dog or plank pose, can be completely changed with the use of a wedge.
Wrists aren’t the only joints that can benefit. It’s also great for improving balance and stability, deepening stretches, and supporting proper posture. Sit on it, stand on it, put your hands on it! Lightweight and portable, a yoga wedge is a fun tool to modify flat ground.
Pro Tip: Wedges are light and can sometimes slip around – if so, layer it under your mat rather than on top
Wedge Alternative: rolled/folded mat, or blanket or towel
My Top Pick: Gaiam
Gaiam makes a great, supportive foam wedge. I chose this one because my personal preference is a one-piece style (some wedges are two separate smaller pieces) it’s a little extra long, and it’s light as a feather! All have a wedge shape (hence the name) but can vary in pitch, texture, material, density. As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases.
