Mat

The Must-Have

If you only pick one prop to have, its probably a mat. Mats provide a stable, non-slip surface, ensuring safety during poses and transitions. They also cushion your body against hard floors, helping to prevent discomfort or injury. A mat also defines your personal space, providing you a little bubble that you have seasoned with your good vibes and a small container for fostering focus and mindfulness during practice.

Yoga mats come in a variety of materials, each catering to different needs and preferences. Traditional PVC mats are durable and affordable, while eco-friendly options like natural rubber, cork, and jute offer sustainability and a connection to nature. Thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) mats are lightweight and biodegradable, making them a popular modern choice. There are also optional fabric layers that some add over their mats, such as a mat rug or mat towel.

Look to find a mat that suits your needs. For me & my joints, I need a mat with a little more density. Be curious about the different kind of mats that your local studio might offer or sell- often you can try before you buy.

Pro Tip: all new mats need to break in, so don’t be sad if yours seems slippery and smelly when new- let it air out and give it a scrub with course salt and water, then rise and let dry in the sun if you can. Instant break in! Disclaimer – I have never had a cork mat… this method would likely not be best for them.
